LA speed camera fines and warnings
Los Angeles speed cameras ticket cars going 11 mph or more over the limit. Fines run from $50 to $500, after a 60-day warning period at each camera.
| Speed | Fine |
|---|---|
| 11 to 15 mph over | $50 |
| 16 to 25 mph over | $100 |
| 26 mph or more over | $200 |
| 100 mph or faster | $500 |
How the warning period works
Each camera mails warning notices only, with no fine, for its first 60 days. The clock starts when that camera switches on.
The first cameras switched on October 26, 2026, so their fines start in late December 2026. Cameras that switch on later get their own 60 days.
What a ticket means for you
- It is a civil violation, mailed to the registered owner of the car.
- It adds no points to your license.
- The camera photographs the rear license plate only.
Where the money goes
A private company gets a flat fee per camera. The rest pays program costs, then must go to traffic calming. Who gets the money.
Low-income options
Under AB 645, drivers who meet low-income rules can get the fine cut by 50% to 80%. Los Angeles also lets low-income and unhoused drivers do community service instead of paying. Ask about both when a notice arrives.
